Een typische hoge windturbine (3MW) produceert gemakkelijk 6000 MWh elektriciteit per jaar, goed voor het elektriciteitsverbruik van bijna 2000 gezinnen. Een middelgrote (100 kW) produceert maar 179 MWh wat genoeg stroom levert voor 60 gezinnen. Je hebt dus 33 middelgrote turbines nodig om dezelfde energie op te wekken. En die nemen weer meer plaats in beslag. De energie-opbrengst wordt altijd afgewogen tegen de benodigde ruimte. Vergeleken met zonnepanelen is het verschil nog groter. Om de elektriciteitsproductie van een grote windmolen te evenaren, heb je 100 voetbalvelden vol zonnepanelen nodig.
