Now Friday 16 September, we will inaugurate the first green hydrogen taxi in Brussels together with Taxis Verts, as part of a one-year pilot project. Through this project, Eoly/Virya, active in hydrogen since 2012, and Taxis Verts, a major player in paid passenger transport in Brussels, aim to test hydrogen as a solution for the development of a high-performance fleet of emission-free taxis.
This collaboration is part of the objectives of the Brussels Capital Region’s 2030 climate energy plan.
Emission-free taxis in Brussels
To prepare for the phasing out of cars with combustion engines in Brussels, and more specifically for the obligation for new taxis to be emission-free from 2025, the taxi operators are looking at solutions with battery electric vehicles as well as hydrogen vehicles.
Together with Taxis Verts, we want to test in practice whether hydrogen vehicles can be a suitable solution for intensive light mobility, as used by taxi services. Hydrogen vehicles have a very wide range and can be refuelled in minutes at a hydrogen station. This flexibility is an essential asset for the taxi profession with a direct impact on profitability and ease of use.
The aim of the project is to gather the necessary data and determine what the technical, economic and social success factors will be for the roll-out of a larger fleet of hydrogen taxis in Brussels.
Both drivers who will take turns at the wheel of the first car will enjoy specific training in hydrogen technology and fuel cell operation. This training is provided by our experts. The drivers play an important role because they are the first point of contact for the public. Also, their practical experience of the hydrogen vehicle (range, refuelling time, flexibility, etc.) is essential for evaluation as a function of the larger-scale roll-out.
The taxi will be powered by 100% green hydrogen (based on wind and solar energy) supplied by Eoly/Virya.
This first green hydrogen taxi will be available to customers from 16 September 2022. They will thus have the opportunity to participate in a new form of mobility and experience a technology in full development. To mark the launch, the taxi will run for free on Car Free Sunday, 18 September, in Brussels.
Jean-Michel Courtoy, CEO of Taxis Verts: “We are excited to participate in this innovative pilot project with local partners. Taxis Verts is actively committed to carbon-free mobility, both with electric vehicles and now with hydrogen from our partner Eoly.”
Stephan Windels, CEO of Eoly, commented, “We are delighted with this partnership that fully exploits the know-how and spirit of innovation of local players. Through this pilot project, Virya Energy wants to actively participate in a more sustainable and clean mobility in the capital and throughout Belgium, in line with the values of our society and in line with the Climate Energy Plan 2030.”
